The Hidden Cost of Putting Everyone Else First
As children, we receive praise, affection, and approval when we behave well, work hard, or put others first. Over time, many of us begin to link our worth to what we do for other people. As adults, this can show up as always being the reliable one, the person who says yes, helps everyone, and rarely asks for anything in return.
Kindness, compassion, and generosity are wonderful qualities. But when we constantly put everyone else’s needs ahead of our own, it can come at a cost.
When Giving Becomes Draining and Exhausting
The problem arises when giving becomes the only way we feel valued. Alas, this pattern can lead to exhaustion, overwhelm, resentment, anxiety, and even burnout. You can become so used to caring for others that receiving feels uncomfortable and struggle to accept help, dismiss compliments, or feel guilty taking time for themselves.
Why Putting Yourself First Feels So Hard
For many people, self-care feels selfish and true value comes from what you contribute to others. Rest can feel unproductive. Saying no can feel uncomfortable and selfish. Asking for help can feel almost impossible.
But putting yourself first doesn’t mean you stop caring about others. It simply means recognising that your needs matter too. Looking after yourself allows you to show up as a healthier, calmer, and more balanced version of yourself or for both you and the people around you.
Simple Ways to Start
Dramatic changes can feel stressful, so small steps are the answer. Instead of automatically agreeing, just pause to give yourself time to consider whether you generally have the energy and capacity before saying yes.
Accept Help
When someone offers assistance, try accepting it as receiving support is not weakness and is part of healthy balance.
Make time for yourself and, each day, do something that brings you enjoyment, even if it’s only for a few minutes.
It could be as simple as:
* Going for a walk
* Reading a book
* Listening to music
* Enjoying a cup of tea
* Spending time in nature
* Doing something creative
Notice Your Own Needs
Ask yourself one simple question each day:
“What do I need right now?” The answer may be rest, quiet, support, movement, connection, or simply a moment to breathe.
Ask for Help
You don’t have to carry everything alone. By allowing others to support you, it creates healthier, more balanced relationships and reminds you that you’re worthy of care too and teaches them to do so to.
You Matter Too
Treat yourself as you would your own best friend as you deserve the same kindness, patience, and compassion that you offer so freely to everyone else. Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish. It’s necessary because when you stop running on empty, you have more energy, more presence, and more of yourself to share with the people who matter most.
And sometimes, the kindest thing you can do for everyone around you is to start by being kind to yourself.
